Book Review: Thr3e by Ted Dekker

Thr3e by Ted Dekker gave me sleepless nights. No matter how I want to give this book a ⅘ rating, it’s a big FIVE for me. When I was done reading I kept asking myself what on earth did I just read? Really? How come? How did that happen? This book is not what I’d refer to as a Christian fiction but it still is.

Suspense filled. Toe curling. Intriguing. Imagine getting a threat call from a stranger? He executes his threat and you flee in time-but the threat keeps coming, harder and harder. What “sin” is the stranger talking about? How will you survive? How will you escape? A mind blowing un-put-downable mystery/thriller novel (if there’s  any word like that.)

Thr3e by Ted Dekker Book Description

Kevin Parson, a seminary student, receives a call from someone called Slater on his way home. Slater tells him he has 3 minutes confess his sins to the world on tv or else his car will explode. Kevin doesn’t confess and at exactly 3 minutes his car explodes. But Kevin was smart enough to get out of the car before the explosion. Now the whole city is on tenterhooks about the this mysterious bombing.

Kevin calls his childhood friend Samantha Sheer to help him. Alongside with Jeniffer Peters an an FBI agent whose brother was Slater’s last victim. All signs of of the past killings in the city point to the same maniac attacking Kevin. Can the trio solve the puzzles before Slater kills Kevin. Or worse, all three of them?

As a said earlier, I’ll not categorize Thr3e by Ted Dekker as a Christian ficton. Yes, there are excellent Christian fiction books and at the same time there are good writers who just happen to be Christians. While most Christian books talk about God in his infinite mercy. Ted Dekker has talked about God subconsciously. The Good. The Bad. And the one struggling between.

I’ve never read anything like Thr3e by Ted Dekker. The suspense was killing. Every time I flipped a page I just had more questions without answers. To begin with, every character was well thought of and represented. Even the minor characters had a significant role to play in the novel. The traits of religion and Christianity were in this book but they were subtle and not obvious like I’M PREACHING ABOUT GOODNESS HERE. It’s a great read for both Christians and non Christians.

Multiple Personality Disorder was just something I’d read to just grasp the basic meaning of it. But seeing it being acted out (in my head of course) was a whole different thing. Ted Dekker is a good storyteller. A very good one. I’m not really into mystery/ thrillers because they make me think. What’s the use of all these?

“The three natures of man. Good, evil, and the man struggling between! ‘The good that I would, that I do not, but that which I would not, that I do.’ There are really three natures in there! One, the good. Two, that which I would not. And, three, I!”

Excerpt From

Thr3e by Ted Dekker

The ending left me astonished. The plot was slow considering it’s a 4 days story in a 400 plus pages novel, I’d say that was expected. But then it was really hard to tell the ending. Despite the clues and all I kept saying, “what could be this secret Kevin? Samantha, could it be true? Speak, how, whattt? Sadly I can’t tell much of the plot of Thr3e by Ted Dekker because I’ll be giving the story away.

But then I’m sure there are others who must have read this book and are still like wow! How did it happen?

I’ll Thr3e by Ted Dekker to anyone who can hold their wits. This book gave me chills. Every time I closed my eyes, Kevin flashed before me. Nope, the book isn’t scary. It’s just like watching a crime documentary “her arms were cut off, her legs were cut off, her eye plucked.” And you’re just there munching on whatever unafraid. But when you go to bed you can’t stop thinking of how her legs were cut off. Yes, that just how Thr3e by Ted Dekker is.

If you’re interested in more Ted Dekker novels, I recommend you read BLACK (THE CIRCLE SEIRES).  And for more mystery thrillers, I suggest you try Dan Brown. Oh la la!

But then I’m sure there are others who must have read this book and are still like wow! How did it happen?

So yeah a little spoiler here, read at your own risk.

So after I was done, the first question that came to me was so how did those conversations take place? Well, we’ll just have to conclude that everything happened in his head. Again, I’m sure it wasn’t just me who never noticed that Jennifer had never met Samantha in person. I had to go back and read their conversations to be sure. Another thing was how was he able to move around like Slater and was not seen. Have a knowledge so good like Samantha? Honestly so many questions that I may never get answers to. Phew
